Charles and Camilla visit Wootton BassettTape no. 29-01-10/1 Location: You Tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm3fYG82yR0 The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall paid a visit to Wootton Bassett today to thank the town for its support for the armed forces. Charles and Camilla both laid wreaths at the war memorial in the Wiltshire market town following a service to dedicate a new flagpole. Hundreds of people had earlier lined the streets in mourning as hearses carrying the coffins of two British soldiers passed through the town. Prince of Wales Respect: Prince Charles and Camilla lay wreaths at the war memorial in Wootton Bassett after the dedication of a new flagpole in the town Lance Corporal Daniel Cooper, 21, from 3rd Battalion The Rifles and Rifleman Peter Aldridge, 19, from 4th Battalion The Rifles, died in separate incidents in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Rfn Aldridge, from Folkestone, Kent, took the death toll of British service personnel to 250 when he died in an explosion near Sangin on January 22. L/Cpl Cooper, from Hereford, was killed in an explosion as he tried to clear a path in an area south of the Sangin district centre. His death brought the total losses to 251. Their bodies were flow into RAF Lyneham this morning and the coffins, draped in Union flags, passed through the town heralded by St Bartholomew's church bell. Prince Charles Ceremony: The Royal couple were expressing their gratitude to the town for its support of the armed forces Prince Charles Mourning: Charles and Camilla look on as the Union flag is raised on the flagpole Camilla, who is colonel-in-chief of Rfn Aldridge's regiment, has written to his family, a Clarence House spokesman said. Her wreath, which had red flowers in keeping with the regiment's colours, read: 'With deepest gratitude, Camilla.' Prince Charles's wreath read: 'In grateful and everlasting memory, Charles.' The Prince of Wales enjoyed a glass of whisky after stopping off at the Cross Keys pub to thank landlady Kirsty Lambert, who regularly looks after bereaved families on repatriation days. They also met members of the Royal British Legion riders branch who attend every repatriation. Rifleman Peter Aldridge Grief: Caroline Aldridge, the mother of Rifleman Peter Aldridge, places her hands on the hearse carrying her son as it passes through the town Daniel Cooper Repatriation: The coffins of Rfm Aldridge and Lance Corporal Daniel Cooper are driven in procession through the town after landing at RAF Lyneham Prince Charles told guest at the town's Conservative Club: 'My wife and I have come here today really to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the people of Wootton Bassett for their unstinting support of Britain's armed forces. 'Only an hour or so ago you lined the High Street for what must have been the 110th occasion to pay your respects to Lance Corporal Cooper of three Rifles, and Rifleman Aldridge of four Rifles who returned home from Afghanistan to their final resting place. 'As a father myself I can only begin to imagine how agonising and devastating it must be for the families of Daniel and Peter and indeed the families of all those who have lost their loved ones on operations overseas. 'As they come to terms with their tragic loss, however inadequate they may be, our thoughts and prayers are with all of them. Prince Charles Gratitude: The Royal couple also stopped at The Cross Keys pub in the town to thank the landlady for her efforts in helping bereaved families Camilla In memory: Camilla, who is colonel-in-chief of 4th Battalion The Rifles, laid a wreath at the war memorial and, below, the wreath left by Prince Charles Prince Charles Rifleman Peter Aldridge Solemn: Pallbearers carry the coffin of Rfm Aldridge from a Hercules at RAF Lyneham 'Above all this country owes these brave men a great debt of gratitude which is why it's wonderful to see the good people of Wootton Bassett honouring that debt time after time when our boys come home on their final journey.' He added: 'Your actions have come to symbolise our nation's grief. We would like to express our profound gratitude to you all for your support.' Town mayor Steve Bucknell said: 'I think it is testament to how important the armed forces are to the Royal Family and what the people of Wootton Bassett have been doing here. 'I think people across the country have wanted to show their support for the armed forces for some time.' There have been more than 100 repatriations passing through Wootton Bassett since April 2007, when runway repairs at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire meant that dead soldiers were flow into nearby RAF Lyneham instead. RAF Lyneham is due to close at the end of 2012, when repatriations should revert to Brize Norton. Officers from Wiltshire and Ministry of Defence Police, who patrol the repatriations, were among those invited to hear the Prince speak, along with business leaders, civic dignitaries, the sea cadets and the war memorial committee. Australian bush fire serviceTape no. 31-03-09/1 Location: The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall joined the Australian Prime Minister at a memorial service at Westminster Abbey in honour of all those killed in the devastating bush fires which recently swept across south east Australia. Camilla was making her first public appearance since she was forced to cancel two engagements on medical advice after she was diagnosed with acute bronchitis. As previously examined here, the Royal Family have offered extensive tributes and support to all those affected by the bushfires, the most devastating of which destroyed more than 2000 homes and displaced more than 7,500 residents when the infernos swept across Victoria on February 7th. Tuesday’s service included performances by Australian artists as well as prayers, readings and hymns. Speaking ahead of the event, author Kathy Lette – an organiser of the memorial service – said: Australian author Kathy Lette, one of the organisers, said: "We have organised this memorial service as a mark of respect and to raise funds for the victims." "Australians are hardened to bush fires, but nothing could prepare us for this gut-wrenching catastrophe. This service will show that tragedy will not dent an indomitable spirit." |

Naning the TornadoTape no. 19-02-09/1 Location: He's made thousands of speeches during his six decades on the public stage. Nevertheless, onlookers witnessed the rare sight of the Prince of Wales choking up as he named a new steam engine in York today. However, it was smoke rather than tears which threatened to spoil the royal launch as Charles and a giggling Camilla battled to be seen amidst the smoke emitted by one of the real stars of today's show: a steam engine. While their South America travel plans have prompted a real head of steam from environmentalists, the royal couple have been enjoying a more sedate and less controversial form of transport than a private jet. As you can see and hear for yourself in this exclusive video from Calyx TV, today's engagement in the North East of England saw as much attention focused on the Royal Train as on the VIPs. A highly expensive but favoured form of transport of Prince Charles, the Royal Train was today pulled between York and Leeds railway stations by a steam engine which was lovingly built by a small group of volunteers in nearby Darlington. It was in 1990 that a team of rail enthusiasts dreamt up the outwardly implausible idea of building their own steam locomotive. Almost two decades later, the £3m Tornado departed Darlington bound for King’s Cross, London, on February 7th 2009. This was the first such commercial journey by a steam engine in Britain in almost fifty years. Now, just over a week after that emotional journey, the Tornado has welcomed aboard a future King and his wife. The regal progress between railway stations took place after the royal couple officially named the A1 Peppercorn class locomotive and met Dorothy Mather, the president of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust which is the organisation behind the original project to build the train. Arthur Peppercorn was the designer of the original A1 class steam engine. His official duties over, Charles boarded the footplate of the steam engine before setting off on the next stage of his journey across the region. Speaking ahead of today's royal seal of approval, the chairman of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust said: "The trust, and all of its supporters, are very deeply honoured that The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will be naming Tornado at York railway station." Continued Mark Allatt: "This honour is the ultimate recognition of the shared vision and determination of all of those who worked so hard over 19 years to bring Tornado into being." Such pride is shared by Darlington’s Mayor, Ian Haszeldine, who said of today’s royal visit: "It is a real privilege that something that's spent so much time in Darlington has got to the stage where it's going to be named by a member of the royal family. It's really the icing on the cake for the trust, and for Darlington. It's superb." THEROYALIST.NET |

Sunset Parade at Cranwell.Tape no. 10-04-08/1 Location: While it is today's passing out ceremony at RAF Cranwell which has attracted most of the attention thanks to the appearance (as I'll endeavour to show you later in the day) of Kate Middleton by William's side, last night there was an equally interesting spectacle played out on the parade ground. The Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William donned their finest wardrobe for an evening which incorporated a dinner and fly-past. The event, at which Prince Charles was guest of honour in his capacity as Air Chief Marshall, was staged to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force, a regiment which has always enjoyed a close association with the Crown. With sincere thanks to Calyx TV, here's an exclusive video bringing you the highlights of last night's event. Meanwhile, I'll be working throughout the coming minutes and hours to bring you full coverage of today's passing out parade, including (bar any major disasters!) a second exclusive video from RAF Cranwell. |

Harry in bowler in Hyde Park marchTape no. 11-05-08/1 Location: Prince Harry made the transition from partygoer to typical English gent within a matter of hours this weekend as, the morning after another heavy night at Boujis, Lieutenant Wales marched with other members of the Blues and Royals past his father the Prince of Wales at the annual Household Cavalry Memorial Parade in Hyde Park. The event afforded the 23-year-old prince the chance to be reunited once more with some of the soldiers with whom he served during his ten-week tour of duty in Helmand province in Afghanistan. As witnessed in previous years, Prince Harry and his colleagues donned the traditional ensemble of suits, bowler hats and umbrellas as they marched in recognition of the proud history of both the Household Cavalry and the parade itself, one which has its roots in World War I. The wardrobe donned by the regiment at the parade which traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in May has its roots in the fact that so many men went from the city to the trenches in the dark days of 1914-1918. Up on the dais at the event in London's Hyde Park, Prince Charles looked on proudly as his recently promoted son marched past in a parade which also included the presence of five bands and detachments of the Yeomanry. And not for the first time at this annual event, there was a very familiar face amongst the ranks: none other than the first husband of the prince's second wife Camilla - Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles. |

Charles and Camilla open chasdaTape no. 17-03-08/1 Location: He’s already an award-winning artist, sportsman, businessman, sometime TV presenter and, of course, one of the world’s most famous men who is destined to sit on one of the world’s most celebrated (and richest) thrones. Now, Prince Charles has turned not-so-humble shopkeeper. In a move which may have some of his local rivals grinding their teeth in despair at finding themselves in competition with ‘H.R.H. The Prince of Wales’, Charles has now added to his long list of roles by setting up his own Highgrove Shop. The store is located in Tetbury, the quaint old town which is close to the Wales family’s Gloucestershire home. And as to be expected of the shop which – unlike Harrods – will never be in any danger of losing the royal crest over its door, Monday saw its regal owners and two members of the extended family declaring one’s store open for business. As you can see in the above video, also there to witness Charles' new business venture was his step-daughter, Laura Lopes, and her new baby daughter, Eliza. As well as being an official engagement, this was a chance for the family to catch up, Camilla having recently enjoyed time with her other grandaughter -Tom and Sara's 5-month-old baby Lola - during a holiday in the Caribbean. Contrary to earlier reports, the Duchess was not joined on the sunshine break by her ex-husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, and his second wife, Rosemary. Despite being newly returned from their tour of the Caribbean, Charles and Camilla have made a swift return to the spotlight in Britain as they toured their new realm, one which may ultimately herald the opening of further Highgrove stores across Britain. Having already opened up his private estate to literally thousands of guests (pictured), the majority of whom will have been led on a tour of the gardens, the new store is now bringing a scent and taste of Highgrove to the populace at large. On sale are more than 700 products inspired by, or sourced from, the Highgrove garden in which the prince himself has found solace away from his diary of engagements across Britain and around the world. All items have been personally selected for sale by Charles himself. Products range from organic foods and vegetables, including Charlotte potatoes and Happil strawberries, as well as Highgrove honey produced by the royal bees (costing £5.95) and even Lebanese soaps (£5.95) which the prince discovered during an overseas tour. The prices of some of the products on offer have a hint of princely extravagance: a simple mug bearing an image of a Highgrove hen costs no less than £14.95 (personally speaking I think I'd want the hen AND the mug for that price!). Making clear that none of the profits from the shop will go to the royal owner, Clarence House says of this new venture: "All profits from the shop will be channelled into The Prince’s Charities Foundation, who exist to manage and allocate funds generated by The Prince’s social enterprises." |

Charles reaches 60Tape no. 14-11-08/1 Location: He's a few years away from the official male retirement of 65. Nevertheless, the Prince of Wales today received a most unwelcome reminder of the passing of the years from a representative of an institution which has often highlighted and even revelled in his misery. The birthday gift? A bus pass reminding the man with a well-publicised fondness for private jets and yachts that he's now old enough to travel alongside other senior citizens on the nation’s public transport network! Never one to miss an opportunity for self-promotion, The Sun newspaper sent out its veteran Royal photographer Arthur Edwards armed with the an iced cake decorated with a bus pass showing the name and date of birth of 'Charles Windsor'. The present was handed over by royal favourite 'Arfur' as the Prince and Camilla visited Beckton Community College in London for the launch of The Prince’s Trust Youth Week. Today’s launch marks the start of a week-long campaign to highlight the worth of young people in society. During the obligatory walkabout, the prince also received something which may have been a little more welcome than the afore-mentioned sign of his increasing years: a kiss from a female admirer. Naiyer Qureshi broke royal protocol to ask for a smacker from the prince. And thankfully for him (and her) the resulting kiss was greeted with a broad smile from Camilla. Later in the day the royal couple listened to the latest rendition of 'Happy Birthday' as they attended a concert at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, by youngsters whose lives have been enriched thanks to The Prince's Foundation For Children and The Arts. |

VIEW THIS EVENT ON CalyxTV You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oUrymydBEA The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall joined President and Mrs Sarkozy of France for a memorial service at Battle of Verdun. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Gloucester joined three octogenarian veterans of the 'Great War' for a solemn service of remembrance at the Cenotaph. Having joined hundreds more dignitaries and onlookers in a two-minute silence at 11am – the very moment the Armistice Treaty was signed by the Allies and Germany in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France, in 1918 – the Duchess watched as World War One veterans Bill Stone, aged108, Harry Patch (110) and Henry Allingham (112) laid wreaths at the steps of the Cenotaph. Mr Patch spoke of the importance of continuing to remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by all those who fought for King and Country, saying: "I am very happy to be here today. It is not just an honour for me, but for an entire generation.” Continued the last survivor from the trenches of the First World War: "It is important to remember the dead from both sides of the conflict. Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims." FURTHER READING: Nicolas & Carla Welcome Charles & Camilla To The Palace |

Charles and Camilla at GlamisTape no. 21-04-08/1 Location: The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have unveiled a further memorial to the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Continuing their stay in Scotland, Charles and Camilla have been in Angus where, bearing the titles of Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, the couple jointly opened new gates built in honour of the late Queen Mother at the entrance to Her Majesty's ancestral home. Once again wearing full Scottish tartan, the couple appeared in high spirits despite recent newspaper reports suggesting difficulties in their three-year marriage. Camilla also spent some time chatting with local youngsters afforded time off school to watch the royal ceremony, just the latest in a long line of events at which Prince Charles has paid tribute to the life of his late grandmother. During her early years, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon spent many happy says at her childhood home of Glamis Castle. Located near Forfar in Angus, the castle enjoys historic links to the royal family spanning as far back as 1372. It was here too that Elizabeth helped boost the morale of injured soldiers taken to the castle to recuperate from often horrific injuries during the ‘Great War’ of 1914-1918. World War I was declared on August 4th 1914 – the very day on which Lady Elizabeth celebrated her 14th birthday. Many years later, the castle was at the forefront of happier scenes, for it was at Glamis that Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret Rose – the second child of the then Duke and Duchess of York (latterly King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) - was born in August 1930. The new gates are a lasting tribute to the enduring popularity of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in the area in which she grew up and spent many happy times during her 101 years. The Queen Mother Memorial Gates have been erected thanks to the money raised by donations from locals as well as fans from across Britain and around the world in the months and years since the death of the lady popularly known as the 'Queen Mum' at Royal Lodge, Windsor, on March 30th 2002. |

Charles and Camilla visit the flood hit areas of Upton-on-Severn and TewkesburyTape no. 27-07-07/1 Location: As you can see in this exclusive video from Calyx TV the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have been witnessing the devastation caused to local communities in Gloucestershire following the worst flooding in Britain for sixty years. The couple spent part of Friday touring some of the worst hit areas in the county in which they live at Highgrove House. Camilla also has a home in the area, Raymill House, to which she continues to retreat away from the confines of the royal court. Meeting residents of Upton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire and Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, Charles praised the military personnel and ordinary members of the public who've spent much of the week working in often extraordinary circumstances. As you can hear in the video, both Charles and Camilla spent time chatting with locals and even popped into a local pub for a drink with some of those people evacuated from their beseiged homes. Having already made several visits to other regions of Britain hit by similarly destructive floods, Prince Charles also noted the community spirit which has helped locals through some of the most difficult times of their lives, saying: "I've seen some obviously disastrous horrors that have affected so many people." "What I have found so wonderful is the spirit the people have displayed. One of the things I have found about the British is when faced with disaster it brings out the best in us." That sense of community spirit and the reserves of strength shown by many in Gloucestershire and elsewhere may be called upon once more in the days ahead. Weather forecasters in Britain are warning of further heavy rainfall and possible flooding in some of the areas already struggling to cope with the effects of a summer deluge which some experts are warning is a foretaste of the damage caused by global warming. |

Watching the Changing of the Guard.Tape no. 02-05-07/1 Location: It wasn't Christopher Robin but Charles Philip Arthur George who went down to the Palace this week as the Prince of Wales became the first member of the Royal Family to personally witness the changing of The Queen's Guard. The future King was on duty at his former London home of St. James's Palace in his capacity as Colonel-In-Chief of the Army Air Corps. Here, the Prince witnessed an afternoon of pageantry and ceremony which further strengthened the historic ties between the monarchy and the British army. Although he chose to serve in the Royal Navy, Prince Charles has enjoyed a close relationship with the army and so it was that the man who will one day take on the dual roles of King and Head of The Armed Forces was at Cleveland Row to watch a unique piece of military history. As you can see in the video, the Prince was on hand to oversee a changing of the guard which saw members of the Army Air Corps making their first public appearance guarding one of the monarch's residences in their new role as 'The Queen's Guard'. The Corps' first public duties at St. James's Palace, which continues to house some of the Prince of Wales' offices, comes in the year the regiment celebrates its Golden Jubilee. The AAC was formed in 1957 following the disbandment of the Glider Pilot Regiment and, as with all regiments within the British army, soldiers from the Corps have been deployed to some of the most dangerous parts of the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Not that Charles doesn't know his son's girlfriend well: although she is officially staying with friends during her holiday in the UK, Chelsy has been given permission by Prince Charles to stay overnight with his young son at Highgrove House whenever Harry spends the weekend home from his army course in Dorset in the South West of England. 21-year-old Chelsy is in Britain for a six-week stay, Harry having invited her to fly over from her home in South Africa to enjoy time as a "normal couple." Unfortunately, the holiday has produced a rollercoaster of emotions for Chelsy, the Sunday newspapers in particular leading the way in printing sensational headlines about Harry's alleged flirtations with other women, usually when he's become intoxicated following a night of hard drinking. As Chelsy appeared at the Ladbrokes tournament at Cirencester on Saturday afternoon, she'd have been aware that her relationship with the third-in-line to the throne was yet again under scrutiny, friends having spoken about the royal romance for a two-page spread in Saturday's Daily Mail newspaper. Although primarily re-running the allegations of recent weeks, including the stories of Coralie Robinson and Catherine Davies, the feature does include some new information about Harry's romance with the girl he long ago declared to be his "first true love." |

Prince Charles starts Woolsack raceTape no. 25-05-98/1 Location: This bizarre sporting event is the highspot of a street fair and community charity festival held every late May bank holiday in Tetbury town centre. The town was once in important centre in the Cotswold wool trade but the Woolsack Races are now the only surviving link with its historical heritage. The Woolsack Races themselves have only taken place on May bank holidays since 1973, but are based on a tradition that goes back to at least the early seventeenth century. In times gone by young drovers were reputed to show their manliness by racing up the very steep Gumstool Hill from the town's wool market at its foot with a woolsack on their back. The modern races involve competitors carrying a 60-pound sack of wool up and down the steep Gumstool Hill in the Tetbury town centre between the Royal Oak and Crown pubs. Woolsack race chairman Peter Hodgson explains, "There has been a pub at the top and bottom of the hill for many years so the races are believed to have started as a show of strength to impress the local ladies after a few drinks!" Today's competitors can take part in a relay event or, if they are really tough, run the individual race. Consuming alcohol before you start is NOT recommended. To reflect the sexual equality of modern times today's event features ladies' races for both individuals and teams - though female competitors carry a lighter load (35 pounds) than their male counterparts. There is also a youth race for 16 to 18-year-olds who also run with the lighter load. The distance between the two pubs is approximately 280 yards. Gumstool Hill (named after the stool used in medieval times for dunking suspected witches and nagging wives in the pond which once stood at the foot of the hill) has a 1-in-4 gradient, so competitors have to be really fit to complete the course. The day's events also include a street fair, entertainment, market, craft show, and a charity auction. |
