The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials has always attracted members of the Royal Family, The Queen was a regular visitor when her daughter Princess Anne took part in the 3 Day event in the 70ies. Prince Michael was an annual visitor, and now Princess Anne watches her Daughter Zara take part. This year there was another first as Prince Edward payed a flying visit, arriving at the front of the House in a Royal helicopter to meet his regiment, the Wessex Yeomanry, for a private reception.

There wasn’t a plunging neckline or hooped earring in sight as the young woman recently hailed as the Royal Family’s 'first WAG' returned to her day job this weekend. The Princess Royal’s daughter has spent the weekend surrounded by the best and most loyal friend of royalty: horses! On Saturday, Zara Phillips saddled up to ride several mounts – including Make Mine Music and the wonderfully named Tallyho Sambucca – at an event at which she has definite home advantage. The Gatcombe Horse Trials are staged in the expansive grounds of Princess Anne’s Gloucestershire estate. Zara and Yorkshireman Mike Tindall continue to live together in a former farm labourer's cottage at Gatcombe Park, the country residence which the Queen bought her only daughter at the time of her ultimately ill-fated marriage to Captain Mark Phillips in 1973. Zara and Mike had wanted to invest in a £1.75m converted barn in the Cotswolds. However, their dream home failed to materialise due to what insiders claimed were "security issues". The Queen’s glamorous granddaughter has recently been the subject of yet more media speculation that she’s planning to wed her England rugby star boyfriend. Friends have suggested that the young lovers are secretly engaged, a pal of Zara recently telling a Sunday newspaper: "They are committed to each other and there's no question they will get married. It's just a question of fitting a date into everyone's schedule as all the Royal Family will be invited." While she may spend much of her time in the saddle, 28-year-old Zara is widely acknowledged to have her feet firmly on the ground. However, said feet recently caused red faces when the fun-loving cousin of William and Harry enjoyed a holiday with Mike on the Indonesian island of Karma Kandara. A fellow holidaymaker couldn't believe his eyes as he witnessed the young royal eating her meal whilst picking dead skin off her feet. The easy-going young royal, who made a further appearance yesterday at the Ledbury Hunt Point-to-Point races at Maisemore Park in Gloucestershire, also offered a fellow traveller an insight into her relationship with the Queen. Princess Anne and her family were out in force on Friday to enjoy the start of one of the most prestigious events in the equestrian calendar: the Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire. Although she's been forced to pull out of the three-day event due to fears the hard ground may cause further injury to her horse, Toytown, British and World Champion equestrian Zara Phillips will likely continue to be a high-profile attendant at this weekend's Trials. As you can see in this exclusive video, before riding to sixth place in the dressage competition on Friday, Zara went through her paces on Toytown before taking time out to do something that is anathema to most members of the Royal Family: signing autographs for fans. Today, however, Zara is first and foremost a professional sportswoman rather than simply a member of the royal family. There was a surprise appearance at Badminton by a young lady who has come to appreciate all-too-well the pressures of life in the spotlight. Prince William's ex-girlfriend, Kate Middleton, almost managed to be just another face in the crowd as she attended the Horse Trials in the company of a young man who I believe to be her brother, James (you may recognise him in the video, his having also accompanied Kate to Prince William's passing out parade from Sandhust last December. As always, though, please don't hesitate to correct me if you believe I've wrongly identified Kate's companion as her brother {Late Note: See the Comments below for further identity of Kate's companion}). However, this was very much Zara's day as she continued to hone her already immense talents in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics of 2008. As usual, the Queen's granddaughter was joined at the latest event in the equestrian calendar by every member of her family: her mother, Princess Anne, brother Peter and their father, Mark, and, of course, her boyfriend Mike Tindall. The World Cup winning rugby star who is widely tipped to marry the Queen's granddaughter is currently on crutches having broken his leg during a recent match. Having been talked up throughout the media as a possible winner at this weekend's Trials, Zara is no doubt disappointed to have had to pull out of one of the most significant and highly anticipated events of the equestrian year. However, having already earned plaudits across the globe by becoming British and World Equestrian Champion at her first attempts, it's clear that Zara will be back very soon to continue her quest to ultimately win Olympic gold in 2008.
